The Virginia Diner

On Valentines Day, my wife, our 11 year old daughter and I took an hour drive to Wakefield, Virginia to visit the iconic Virginia Diner. The Virginia Diner has been a staple for anyone who likes down-home cooking. When Mrs. D’Earcy Davis served hot biscuits and vegetable soup to hungry customers way back in 1929, the little Diner was an authentic refurbished Sussex, Surry, and Southampton Railroad car. As business grew, so did the restaurant. Today the Virginia Diner has been updated and the old railroad car has become a legend, but its quaint atmosphere has been faithfully preserved and is still reflected throughout the restaurant.

Your first visit to the Diner will be a unique experience. Driving on route 460, you will pass several peanut fields. Wakefield is the peanut capital of the world. The Virginia Diner is one company that grows and harvest peanuts in Wakefield.

We parked at the restaurant and were warmly greeted by the staff. This Sundays they have a large buffet set up, but we opted for lunch from the menu. We sat in the rear section, semi exclusively, which was nice, it allowed the three of us to talk.

My daughter Alex had fried shrimp with French fries. These were not your Applebee’s small Asian shrimp. These were jumbo shrimp, probably gulf, and they were delicious! The fries were hot and tasty, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

My wife had the half chicken meal, quite literally half a chicken. The meat was flavorful and moisture. She also ordered onion rings (pictured above). I’m thinking they were cooked in peanut oil, we couldn’t place the taste, but they were good nonetheless.

Finally, I had the American burger that almost cracked my jaw it was so big and tasty! With french fries of course. For dessert, we split one piece of their famous peanut pie. Served hot, with locally grown peanuts, in a gelatin like a pecan pie. The crust was thin but firm, offering enough substance to hold smaller pieces in your hand. Definitely a treat to experience more than once!

As you exit for the day, stop buy their shop, located at the entrance. Here you can fill up onball kinds of nut fantasies. Take them home to share or hide just for you, the Virginia Diner is a diner’s delight!
